An oxygen sensor’s job is to supervise the quantity of oxygen in a car’s exhaust gas as the gas departs the combustion chamber. It produces an electrical signal equal to the quantity of oxygen it comes across. The car’s engine management computer receives the signal, which regulates the air/fuel ratio if said sensor signal suggests the engine is running too rich, or too lean.

The oxygen sensor must be readily able to act in response, right away, to changes in oxygen content, to stop intolerable levels of exhaust emissions, and to keep the engine working at optimum competence. The wrong combination or ratio of oxygen and gasoline can cause absolute damage, not only to your engine, or specifically, the catalytic converter, but the environment as well. This is the reason why oxygen sensor needs to be in good working condition always.

However, like any hardworking vehicle part, oxygen sensors eventually will stop working due to age and wear. As an oxygen sensor ages, contaminants from oil ash and ordinary combustion build up on the sensing component, decreasing the sensor’s ability to react instantly to changes in the fuel / air mixture. Also, this may confuse the sensor from actually processing accurate data, like giving a signal that the air/fuel mixture is richer than it actually is, and so on. And with this, the need for more fuel emissions and higher fuel consumption is always a result.
